Goodbye, Bargello

No, that's not the name of one of the songs on the album. It's a sad farewell to the longest running gig I've had - almost 4 years! I heard the news today, oh boy. The restaurant is closing its doors on May 9, and these next couple of Fridays will be my last chance to play for the good folks there. I never thought I'd be at one venue for so long. It feels like yesterday that I walked into the place in the middle of the day and asked the owner to let me play the piano. He didn't even let me finish playing "Piano Man" when he hired me on the spot. Thank you, Frank. I hope to see some of you out there this Friday or the next for a musical farewell to the Bistro.

On to the masters!

Well, the songs are finally mixed and are being mastered (prepared for CD distribution). The last time I recorded an album at home, it was on a cassette! There were no CD's let alone online music! But enough about how old I must be. On to the new stuff...

Mixdown Time

"The miles are getting longer, it seems, the closer I get to you..."
- Daughtry

This is how I feel about the new album. It's been a little over a year since I started work on it, and now that I'm about a month away from completing it, it seems so far away! The songs are finally taking a shape close to their final form, and I don't want to cut any corners. I'm almost there.

Thank God two of the songs, "Alaska" and "Like Superman", were done in time to present to my father before he died. He had been bothering me for years to record those two songs, and it was incredibly fulfilling to be able to give him these as his last birthday present. Those two songs will never be the same to me.

There were also a few songs written with two of my musical soulmates, John Portuondo and Nelson Felipe, that I've given a fun refresh for the album. Also, as I narrow down the final selection of songs (there will probably be 12 out of about twice as many songs) I'm realizing that the mixing process takes a lot longer than the recording process! More than anything this album represents years of pent up emotion and frustration at not being able to record... until now.
